Linkedin

Linkedin Post

The social networking site Linkedin can be very beneficial and is a very useful professional tool. Linkedin can connect people with professionals, companies, and colleagues providing a service that is priceless in today's world. In addition to connecting with the above categories/people, which could lead to job offers or discussion, jobs can be listed and searched for. This is similar to Nacelink in the fact that a profile is set up and you can tailor your search to your interests and your experience. Also, it provides links to both Career Builder and Monster, which are very helpful as a profile is already created for people who want to use those sites.

In regards to the actual profile aspects, Linkedin is not as personal as Facebook, Twitter, or Myspace. The Linkedin profile is much more professional and low risk as the layout is orientated around schools, work experience, and jobs versus picture albums, wall posts, or cyber gifts. This layout provides a sort of 'live' resume that can be constantly updated and viewed at any time. It could also be beneficial to actually have a copy of a resume available online, but Linkedin does not offer this option.

Some things that do relate to other popular social networks include groups and status updates. As a member of Linkedin groups can either be created or joined. The use of these groups can be a very helpful career tool. Companies and alumni associations often create groups and joining to stay connected with these groups can help an individual keep up with current events in their specific field. Status updates are also available on Linkedin and this can directly connect to Twitter and vice versa. Linkedin also has an option to display information regarding a Twitter account, website or blog links, and a biography.

Overall Linkedin is a great social network to be connected to. It provides a plethora of information including groups, news, updates, jobs, and other social connections. It is more of a professional tool than a personal one that can provide an edge in finding a job and staying on top of a certain occupation's events. Join Linkedin, it will not be regretted!

ART - My passion

When thinking of a passion, something that can consume me at any moment, the thing I think of is art. Art is a fairly broad term so I'll narrow it down to what my interests in art are. They include drawing, painting, printmaking, and design.

For as long as I can remember I have been drawing and have been somewhat talented at it. As a kid that is the majority of what I did, whether it was documenting a moment or making up a cartoon, I was drawing it and filling numerous notebooks. I loved art in school and always had fun with that usually excelling at what I did.

My drawing has done much for me, from providing happiness to making money. Whenever I need an outlet I draw. I just get lost in it when I start. I can draw just about anything, but my favorite things to draw are cars, athletes, and things in nature. The medians I draw in range from chalk to graphite to colored pencil. I am very proficient in colored pencil as it is my favorite thing to use.

My painting has also been very good to me. Like drawing, it is an outlet for me. I do most of the same subjects as in drawing, however I focus more on nature scenes and wildlife. I can paint with just about anything. My best work is in watercolors and tempura, while I have also used acrylics and oils. In high school my claim to fame was painting life-size portraits of superstar athletes. This included Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, Cal Ripken Jr., and Barry Sanders. These were painted with tempura on cardboard sheets and are sitting in my room at home.

My printmaking and design experience go hand in hand. In printmaking I have learned to design and cut my own silk sreens to make t-shirts or print on cloth. I've always had a fascination with t-shirts and logos so it makes sense that I enjoy this so much as well. I have always been designing t-shirts. Throughout high school I would design some that would even sell in large quantities making me some spending money. I also was asked to design logos for t-shirts in addition to doing things for the paper and the school.

I am very actively performing my artistic abilities. For two years I worked as a cartoonist for the Michigan Tech lode, sometimes getting up to five cartoons printed for the week. It was a fun job and I earned money doing something that I enjoyed. I also have done quite well in art shows the past few years. My senior year of high school I placed third in a regional show that earned my $500 and ever since I have been placing at shows, most notably the Tech Arts Festival. This has shown me that my talents can earn me some money. My sophomore year here, the University bought one of my paintings from the Tech Arts Festival and now my Great Blue Heron watercolor is hanging in the MUB foodcourt. Another couple of things I have done on campus include designing last year's Winter Carnival logo, the logo for the Tri-Hall Weight Club, and the logo for the Take A Slice of Tech program.

I also have done commission work for people. This work usually involves portraits of their children or gifts for friends. I have already had a few commissioned pieces this year. One of the other art things I would like to get into more is airbrushing. I would love to learn how to airbrush and plan on purchasing one in the near future. The goal of that purchase would be to paint goalie helmets. I painted my own goalie helmet last winter and it turned out great! However this was done by hand with acrylic paints. I have also painted street hockey goalie masks and have learned much about the process. I would love to become efficient with an airbrush and get into that business on the side.

My latest projects include making a website to showcase my work and get my name out there as well as writing and illustrating children's books.

Bios

Below are biographies about me, the first is a bio used for my social networks while the second is my Twitter bio.

Social Networking Bio:

My name is Rick Peterson. I am 21 years old and hale from Hermantown, Minnesota. I am a senior mechanical engineering student attending Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Michigan. I will receive a bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering and an Art Minor upon graduation on May 1, 2010. Prior to attending Michigan Tech I was at Hermantown High School where I was near the top of my class while running cross country and track.

Aside from my schooling I have many interests. My passion is art and I continue to practice that as much as I can. I love the outdoors and camping, I often travel to the BWCA each summer for a week trip. In addition to my art passion I enjoy reading (as of late Edgar Allen Poe) and writing. Someday I would like to write a childrens book or open an art studio. I still run and have completed the Garry Bjorkland Half Marathon in Duluth, Minnesota and will be running it again this year. I have also done a triathlon as well as play hockey frequently and rollerblade. My favorite music is either country or classic rock (especially Boston) and I love the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Another interesting tidbit is I own over 125 hats.

Twitter Bio:

I am currently a student attending Michigan Technological University pursuing a bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering and an Art Minor.

Mission Statement

My mission statement is as follows:

To passionately capitalize on opportunities at hand involving creativity and to operate every day with a positive attitude, motivation and succeed with an alluring confidence.

Obviously this mission statement is subject to change. It was kind of tough to come up with, but after a few tries I got it down. What I am focusing on here is mostly to perform duties involving creativity, focusing mostly on writing, design, and art (drawing, painting). These are the things that make me happiest in addition to reading. The second part of my statement involves the way I go about tackling the day ahead. I want to have a positive attitude and a motivation that drives me to succeed no matter what, all while having a confidence that attracts or appeals to others, which could end up making professional relationships.

Web Page

On Sunday after finishing my Personal Brand Management website, I decided to bite the bullet and buy a domain name. The logic behind this was to get myself in gear on making my own website, if I have a domain name I have the chance to actually create.

Upon purchasing my domain name (I used Godaddy.com), I quickly learned that the domain name is just the beginning. There is so much that goes into a website I never knew about. Frankly I was very confused. There was now hosting I add to choose and figure out in addition to the reality of creating a website, which means the html code. Godaddy offers free hosting with my domain purchase, however my site contains advertisements at the top which stick there until upgrading to a better host, ha imagine that. Of course this costs money, about $7 a month, and right now I don't know enough to justify spending that much.

So far, only a few days into my purchase, I have started playing with the formation of my html code. It seems difficult at first but like anything, after a little practice and knowledge, it isn't too hard. I have been doing a lot of searching and looking up html code though and this helps immensely. As of right now there isn't much to the site, it has a heading, a nice little message with some color, a link to this blog (which works!), a broken link (more research on my plate), and a picture of my girlfriend and I.

It's been an interesting experience so far and I can say at the moment I am not to happy with my Godaddy experience, sorry Danica.

First Post

Currently sitting in my Personal Brand Management class. It is fairly interesting, by far the most fun class I have had here at Michigan Tech in a long while. It is a refreshing break from all the engineering! The concept behind the class is great, the idea of branding yourself is incredible. I love the idea of creating an image of yourself that defines you everywhere from online to in person. I think this will be very beneficial to me!
